RobWarrior: I had the same feeling after my first ride; I finally changed my center spring for a stiffer one. The upgrade decrease the steering effort. I have no idea of your weight and suspension set up; but It works for me (front spring loose).

I have a set up close to Herndrop. I got a lighter steering as soon as I changed the OEM spring for an heavier one (ski doo parts). Other point: I run one 6 inch carbide and one runner on my tuner ski.
Had the same issue on my 2009,
FYI 2010 and up have OEM plates.
I installed them.
You shall drilled a hole at the end of the crack to avoid the propagation of the crack.
I have Mountain Tech 43+2: it s a good improvement over stock: corner, bump steer, etc
You can ajust camber and caster and the ball joint are huge compare to stock.
The steering was stil heavy, so I finally change my center spring for a stiffer one; it light up the steering
