Yes yearly would be best but good oil does help. If not cleaned they can gum up and be difficult to remove and obviously not work properly. That can also break the cables that operate them. Not a difficult job once you have done it a couple of times. Certainly wouldn’t hold me back from buying...

Go with the Roest plate!!! I got one last season to replace my Yamaha float plate and it looks like a factory part. No I take that back because Yamaha does not make one this good. Just get the Roest! Installs easy and I know it actually protects. Not just for looks like the Yami float plate.
