Anyone thinking of extending their Attak to 144 x 2". I have a MM700 right now and for the riding I do I would prefer a 144 sled. Just wondering the possibilities. I'm sure the 2" will fit right? Just add rail ext. and a tunnel ext. I'd like to know your thoughts! Thanks. :itchy:

That idea requires a complete skid change.

#1: geometrically bad idea, the suspension won't work right if they're longer.

#2: back of the rail isn't strong enough on those skids to support any extension.

#3: the benefit of 144 over 136 is in the reduced approach angle, which allows it to climb up on top of the snow, rather than trenching. Since a rail extension won't help the approach angle, you won't be recieving any significant improvement in deep snow performance.

#4: that long of rails without shifting anything backwards will handle REALLY BAD if you drive on anything hard.

This is just a guess But I think you can relocate the 136 skid to reduce teh steep attack "approach" angle if you want to reduce the trenching. I'm sure mountain performace will sell a kit.

So I guess I better just wait and see what's what b4 I go and stroke a 14K cdn cheque fer on of these things then. :o|

I also thought about buying a cheap 03 RX1 and doing a 141 cat suspension in it with 153 track. I believe you have to do this because of the different mounting locations. Anyways, what did you do to your 03 to 144 it?

jtssrx: examine the shape of the suspension. If you relocate it, then under compression, it'll tighten the track up by about 3 inches. Obviously this won't work.

theflamanguy: mine has 7.5 inch rail extensions to bring it to 136", and 4 inch ARM extensions to bring it the rest of the way without compromising the skid's ability to compress freely. Check it out here: http://www.ty4stroke.com/viewtopic.php?t=6968

LB...are you a master mechanic or just a sled head? That would be exactly what i would like to do to an 03 if I find one cheap enough. On a scale of 1 to 10 how hard was the project? Thanks.

Edit: also how did it ride last year. Were you impressed? We make 2-3 trips to the mountains every year and then cross country the rest of the time and only a couple of trips on the trail system. Would want to use a 2" track. Do you see any problems with that?

I don't care becuase I don't want to change it. I just assumed you could just relocate it like every other skid. Sorry is was just a suggestion

I just like to do my own stuff. The nice thing about working on things outside of my specialization is that *Logic* is *Logic*, no matter what its applied to.

I have an undergrad degree in Computer Science, and in two years, I'll also have an MASc in Electrical and Computer Engineering.

Now for the suspension performance, there are some problems which I anticipated, just didn't get around to correcting yet. With the increased leverage against the shocks, there is a lower shock travel with respect to the suspension travel. This means that one of two things has to be done; either the shocks need to be about twice as stiff, or they have to be given back full travel. I opt for the latter by remounting the front of the shock to a pivot on the rail, similar to this: http://www.ty4stroke.com/download.php?id=9926 , but shorter, and with the relay crossed over the shock instead of running parallel with it.

I can't imagine there being too much trouble with 2" tracks. At worst, you'll need smaller drivers, I'm not sure if there is enough clearance to the front heat exchanger. You might want to ask the mountan guys about that.

Now last point, difficulty.
I can't say that it was difficult, it was definitely time consuming, but if you plan every move before you cut or weld, then there shouldn't be any problems. On top of that, its always harder to design the modification than to copy it. So I say that as long as you're patient, you'll have no trouble.

144 Warrior???

How about extending an 04 Warrior to 144" with rail extensions?

If you are wondering why I keep asking these questions I'll tell ya.
I've been riding Mountain maxes for the last 5 years. The sled that I had previous to that was a 97 ZL440. An awesome little sled. Ever since I went to the 141 MM's I've been making the odd trip to the Mountains, a very enjoyable experience. The amount of trail riding done around here where I live is very minimal. We are always going "cross country". The longer tracks for this purpose is a night and day differance to the short tracks. I always make the comment "It's like riding in a Cadillac compared to sports car". They float a lot better and get up on the snow faster, obviously. I think for my purpose the 141/144 track length is perfect for me. I have been considering an 05 151 mountain Vector/RX-1 but that track length I feel is just a tad too long for the seldom bit of trail riding that we do. I want to get into the 4 stroker. I'm sick of 2 stroke smoke and and I hate adding oil (because I always forget to bring some) and I really like the electric start. Plus I've had some seat time on an
RX-1 and I love it.
So It's a bit long winded but this is the reason for my "Frankenstein" 144" 4 stroke sled. With my luck I'll go through the loops and do this and then Yamaha will come out with a factory ATTAK 144 in 07! Doh!!!
Thanks for reading.

Same problem extending 136 to 144. The geometry will work, but you gain no advantage due to the far-too-steep approach angle, which will plow through the snow rather than climb up on top of it.

Speaking of the 05 151" sleds though, don't dismiss them. They have a curved rail which lifts up slightly at the rear to improve it for on-trail use. You may want to go with aftermarket wide A-arms though, since they are slightly more narrow up front.

I know thats a picture of an 06, but its a 151 with the same suspension as the 05's. Notice how the rubber at the back isn't even touching the ground.

Maybe you just solved my dilema LB...Thanks for the replies. Now whose got an 05 Vector/RX-1 Mountain for sale???
TFG
EDIT: BTW LB whats the attack angle on the 05's compared to the 06's?

The 151's are all the same angle regardless of 05 or 06, and judging by the pictures, the 162's are also the same as the 151's. The big difference with the approach angle is between the trail sleds and the mountain sleds. All of the 121 and 136 are too steep for off-trail use.
