Yamaha has published and sent a service bulletin out regarding the crankcase breather hose freezing up in extreme cold conditions. This will cause the valve cover gasket to push out from higher than normal internal engine pressures.
Their fix for this is to put a 3/4" slit on the crankcase breather hose.
Just thought I would pass this on.

Thx Fred, what do you recommend we do with your kit and the K&N filter ?
FYI, the slit is to be half-moon shaped and placed on the breather tube portion inside the airbox.

I wonder how it freezes with hot oily air coming out? I'm guessing it's from setting overnight.

:?: I wasn't sure if this was already covered, guess not.
I noticed this slit about 3 weeks ago, while out riding. I asked my friend, who works at the dealership about it (he was riding too). He said that one of their mechanics noticed the hose would buldge with preasure, and figured there had to be a way to let it out before it built up, so he started cutting a small slit in the hose since last Feb. I had mine cut when I bought it in Oct. and happened to notice it, 3 weeks ago. By that time they had the bulletin.
 I'm sure a lot of mechanics are going to take credit for this one

Where exactly do you cut the slit :?:
There was something on this earlier last year with a picture of where to make the cut, but I can't find it.

Make the slit in the highest point on the breather hose. I think I cut mine on the part within the airbox or just behind it, I don't recall.
When there is a problem of the vent closing due to the frigid temperatures, it happens at the very end.
One possible fix I suggested before is to extend a coolant line from the carbs, have it routed starting at the base of the vent hose, through the hose and out at at the end of the hose than run it through the airbox back to the carbs. Whadayathink? Haven't tried it myself.

snowrover, do a search for crank case vents and scroll down to dealer updates, you should find the picture there.

The guys with the airboxes are fine because the oily air will just be consumed by the engine but what about us guys with the filter kits? It will send a fine film onto the clutches :x

The more I think about this the more I believe putting an adapter on one of the K&N's and routing the CC hose there seems like a good idea. The only problem I forsee is one set of carbs would be inhaling the warm oily air. What's Freddies thoughts on that?
Are you guys suggesting to make a slit in this hose right below
the K&N filter ?????
Thanks
