hello everyone, I'm taking delivery of a new 2011 candy red apex soon;pretty excited.My dealer told me that I dont really need to buy spare spark plugs as these engines never foul plugs .He said the only time they will foul plugs is if you start it up in the garage for a few seconds just to let your buddys here it run and then shut it down a few times.True??

Warm it up properly and have no problems.I have 15thousand miles on and never changed a plug because it was bad.

the only place i have needed plugs is in the garage. fouled plugs happen in the garage not on the trail.

Also, If you keep your sled in a garage that isn't heated, and you decide to use a torpedo heater or something to warm it up quick in there to work on the sled. The airbox stays cold a lot longer than the air in the garage. If you start the sled when the garage air is warm and the airbox is still cold, the sled will run like crap because the air temp sensor thinks it's cold and has the sled running rich but you'll have warm air going in the motor.

I'd say he's right on the money. 4 strokes don't foul plugs unless started and not fully warmed up, just as he told you. Also, although it can be done if it had to be, changing plugs on the trail is not a simple job. If you've never owned an Apex before, you'll have a hard time even finding the plugs. Not like the old 2 stroke days.

Thanks for the good info.This does present an enormous problem for me as I think one of the reasons I bought a yamaha 4stroke was to fire it up in the garage and give my ski-doo riding pals a clinic on what a perfomance engine should sound like....(haha) Is it safe to start it up, let it warm up for 5 minutes or so and have no fouling issues??thanks again

If you feel the need to start it up without riding it (garage show) just make sure to let it run until you at least feel some heat on exchangers under foot boards, running boards, whatever you want to call them. The longer you run it the less chance you have of fouling. You best chance at not fouling is of course to not start it in the first place. If you need help with convincing yourself it's not worth it, one evening when you have about four hours, get the laptop out in the garage and go through the process of changing the plugs. Problem solved, it's not that it's that difficult it's just not that fun. It can be done in less than 20 min. if you know what you are doing.
Start it up, always let it warm up (whether riding or not) and don't touch the flipper for at least a two minutes (when cold), when warm don't touch the flipper until it idles down, then go like hell.

I think the key here is to let it run until completely warmed up each time.
Don't touch the throttle until the temp light goes out

If I foul a set of plugs and it's -30 outside, I'm going back inside and calling it a day. I just don't see changing plugs in an Apex when the air is that cold. You'll need bare hands for some of the process. I just can't see it happening. It would need to be a change plugs or die situation.

Some times u have 2 suck it up and just do what u have 2 do. When u'r out on a trip with 7 other guys and a new destination awaits.

Mechanix gloves. I carry them in the back of my sled. I usually need them to fix someone else's sled!
