Was wondering if any of you have found a practical way to remove the big (huge) nut on the MAG side of the sled (holds top gear in place) without buying the special tool from Yamaha.
Maybe a big deep socket? Size?

Leave the key in the shaft and open a crescent wrench up just enough to slide over the shaft. The key will act as a stop and you can break it right loose. I have a crow's foot I break the nut with. Pretty simple.

Yeah I just use a large adjustable and have somebody grab ahold of the secondary.

I use one of those rubber gator wrenchs around the helix on the secondary and then a large cresent.

In all honesty, that's a decent way to do it when you're in a pinch, but I'd rather slap something on my impact and back that sucker out of there.
Any idea on the size of the nut

Sorry......I was an aircraft mechanic for years and have never really liked "slapping" an impact on the main shaft of an engine! To many internal parts for that kind of shock. The crescent is only used to hold the shaft while backing off the nut.

Micro-Belmont sold my the sockets to properly grasp the shaft and fit the upper gear nut cheaper than the Yammie part cost.

Jackshaft, not crankshaft.AaronBND said:Sorry......I was an aircraft mechanic for years and have never really liked "slapping" an impact on the main shaft of an engine! To many internal parts for that kind of shock. The crescent is only used to hold the shaft while backing off the nut.

I think it is 35 or 36 mm, but the best part is I also have a 1/2 drive socket that fits the splines where the secondary fits, so it can be torqued correctly.

grapeape...
Thanks for letting us know about the Micro Belmont sockets.

The socket is 36mm, mountain performance also sells them. Out of stock until fall time,
.

beat me to the 36mm.
I set the break and remove the nut with a socket.

How do you set the brake with the chaincase cover and brake assembly off?

Put an adjustable wrench on the driveshaft.
