Am new to this yamaha thing. But does anyone have a fix or suggestion as to keep oil out of the airbox should I roll my Nytro MTX on it's side or top? Was thinking about pulling the breather tube off the airbox and somehow putting it's own breather/checkvalve on it to keep from sucking oil in the engine. Would appreciate any feedback from you experts. Thanks

Not on a nytro and not tested but I thought that I might chime in.

On my RX I have the Kachess bread box, and while I was at it, I made a vessel out of ABS pipe that piggy-backs on to the rubbermaid, vacuum from the airbox draws at the center of the vessel, and the crankcase connects to the bottom . It maintains vacuum to the crankcase but, on rollover, it will hold up to 350 ml of oil before spilling into the airbox. When back upright, the oil drains back to the crankcase. Less than $10 worth of pipe. I think that it could work on a stock airbox too.

On previous rollovers there seemed to be less than 350 ml lost, so I think that the capacity should be OK. The stock vessel on the RX only holds about 40 ml before spilling into the airbox.

I have had my Nytro on its side, stuck, near inverted, and lost more than enough oil to have my oil light come on and remain on when finally uprighted. Took more than a quart to get it back to spec. I AM disappointed, at the least, at this engineering blunder by Yamaha. To spill over a quart of oil in the wilderness is not something that is "acceptable" by a supposedly more environmentally friendly 4 stroke sled.....

Do you have a picture of this setup to keep oil in the system? Sounds perfect, just can't picture it exactly.

Would be great to see a pix of that set-up as well. Even if it caught the majority of the spill and redrains back into crankcase would be a major plus. I was stuck in a bad way last winter...could not get out by myself, I wanted to roll it out but was not willing to take the chance of a low-oil situation, as I was not carrying extra oil with me on that ride. :drink:

unless the sled is upside down for a LOOOOOONG period of time, not enough oil is going to come out of the overflows to prevent you from riding home.

when out west last year i rolled mine about once a day, the wife roller hers about 2-3 times a day LOL! not enough oil came out to need to add to the fill level.

but an oil reclaimation system to prevent any spillage would be realy nice.

we use one like this on our supermoto bikes.

look under product overview, containment systems on the site, and then supermoto, crank case containment system. this can be routed as a complete reclaimer with some mods. it isnt cheap, and something else may be able to be used. but you'll get the idea. ski

The pipe to the airbox has holes in the exact center of the main vessel so the main vessel will fill half way with oil before oil can get into that smaller pipe. The other pipe comes out of the bottom (when the sled is on its track) of the vessel to the crankcase.

This has NOT been tested yet; but, I can't see any flaws in the theory.

It ain't pretty but I have a nearly impossible time caring about what a sled looks like under the hood.

I guess it depends on what your opinion of a LOOOONG time is. I had my sled near inverted stuck in a hole for 5 or so minutes. The oil was RUNNING out of it. Oil light came on and stayed on, had to add over a quart. That's unsatisfactory. Yamaha needs to come up with a more viable solution for this.

Here's one from Jannety Racing that will probably fit in the airbox. I wonder if the breather would work properly in there, though. It will probably fit somewhere between the oil tank and airbox somewhere...

http://www.ty4stroke.com/viewtopic.php?t=62240

That's exactly what I'm looking for. I assume it will work on a Nytro??

what needs to be welded? I cant weld, so it doenst help me...

Because of the difference in the engine and oil tank designs, I don't think the systems that worked on the RX-1/Apex sleds will be sufficient on the Nytro without some modification.

One of the spigots on the Janetty seperator is not welded on so you can position the tank to your liking, then take it to a welder to weld the spigot in the position best suited to your install.

This makes it fit any machine.

Call Ted Jannety and he will answer any questions you have about applications and installs.

I find I lose less oil if I shut the sled off as soon as it rolls over. Ever put your hand over the breather? Air comes out of it, so tipped over while running the oil pushes out of it. I too dislike the design.

Here are some pics of my set-up. I use a control relay and have it wired so the valve closes when the key is on engine off/kill switch down. When I start the engine it automaticlly cuts power to the valve, which switches it to normal venting mode.
I also wired in a flashing red LED, to indicate whenever there is voltage being supplied to the valve (closed mode). I use it as a warning light, and should never see it flashing while the engine is running. If it does then I know there is a wiring fualt or stuck relay.
