This summer I bought my first yamaha. It is a 05 vector with a custom front mount turbo system. My only plan was to add a head shim to have the ability to run pump gas. Well it did not take long and I had bought a upgraded turbo(Ball bearing). As I was taking it apart I found that I would have to change a number of things to fit the larger turbo. So I started looking around for alternatives. Decided on a mid mount header design.

Currently the motor is still out of the sled and getting the head shim in it.

Making room for the Mid mount turbo

I started cutting the sled apart this last weekend to make room for the turbo in the chassis to get it as close to the motor as possible and to take the exhaust hump out so I can run the rev gas tank.

Here is a drawing of the header design that we are planning. Will be made of 321 stainless.

A few more planned upgrades right now are some bigger idler wheels, Wildchild rider forward, Custom Mesh hood. Light bar for headlights, 15 inch led tail/brake light. Hoping to also pick up and install a shockwave helix as well as a set of supertip clutch weights.

Among these other things, I will be mounting a rev tank, trimming the gas tank cowling for that, trimming the boss seat foam for the rev tank, and also having a header and intercooler built.

Please feel free to give sugestions on what i can do better or little things I can do that are very cheap great ideas(running out of money already).

Tell your friend Richard S. I said hi! We had quite a few e-mails going back and forward when he had his boosted RX-1. He told me he sold it. You have to get him back to the "dark side" -LOL

He told me that you bought this sled - you got a good deal.

I like the apporch you are taking - I can't wait to see that new mid mount header :jump: . He said you had good mechanical skills.

Even thought it is on budget - try to find a cheap IC for your setup.

What guage are the ss321 pipes you are using as header material?

IC and 321

I did pick up a intercooler for the sled. It is a Boondockers intercooler from there race M1000 kit. I am going to cut the tank off the one end and build a new tank to mount up to the carbs.

The 321 that we are using is 16 ga. So .065 wall thickness. I am going to be supporting the turbo as well so the header does not have all the weight on it. And I seem to like to come down hard off jumps or something a few times a year.

Yeah, Rick is building a new sled this year. 1160 watercraft triple in a ski doo chassis. Should be a very fun sled for him. I think he will miss the yamaha though.
 
Tunnel covered.

Got the tunnel closed back up tonight. Used 1/4 stainless steel pop rivets. Pretty darn strong. And Easier to use than solid aluminum rivets with a bucking bar and air hammer. Still need to do some 3/16 rivets in between the 1/4 ones to finish it up.

Yep, Looks like alot of what I am doing here. I know I am not reinventing the wheel. That guy looks to have some good equiptment and fab skills. I think he could benefit from an intercooler and a more efficent header design though. It does look pretty good though. I would be very happy if I see 70+ mph track speeds climbing. That would be very nice. I am debating trying a pitot jet style line to tha carbs. Is the jet go into a tee that bleeds off pressure or Is it a jet that goes inline to restrict flow? My thinking is that with a jet inline you would reduce time to build pressure to the carbs, therefore helping out in the low to mid range but you would still be able to put full boost pressure to the float bowls after a short time of sustained boost.

Am I thinking right on this? Please let me know. If so I want to get an adjustbale powerjet. Much easier than carrying around muliple jets.
 
Motor Position

I think that the vector motor actually sits back in the chassis farther or is tipped at a different angle. I am pretty sure the chassis is the same for the rx1 and vector. And the vector is a direct drive not a gear reduction. So something has to be a bit different there to get the clutchs in the right spot. I wonder if this is the big difference that people seem to notice with the vector over the rx1, as in how it feels for handling. With this I think I actually can get my header very short.
 
Will that seat work with a rev tank. If not let me know, i am looking for one, and Boss is no longer making apex seats

Sounds good I will let you know if I decide to run the ski doo seat instead. If I could find a boss doo seat for a reasonable price I may be inclined to sell this one and ge that one.
 
Have you seen the new sty;le seats. There is a guy on ebay selling them cheap. he is also on snowest too jonny8skidoo I'll be in touch after work today via PM
 
More Progress

Got the motor back in the sled. Working on getting the wiring in the right spots. Put the wideband on it. Cut out the gas tank cover for the rev tank and pretty happy with how the rev tank fits. Have to carve the foam out of the Yamaha boss seat now to fit over the tank. Also plan to get creative with some fiberglass and give it a finished look around the rev tank. That will be the last thing I will do though.

Next thing for the sled is a sleep over at my cousins. To have the header and intercooler built.

Stage II

Cleaned the garage. I was told by a great machinist one time that if you keep the area clean, even just stopping to sweep in the middle of a part that the work that you do will be 10 times better.

Either way the vector is ready to head to the welder to have a header built and intercooler welded up. Also got my expensive oil today. Would never put this expensive oil in a car but seems like a no brainer on a sled that I am going to thrash on very hard.
