Gotta ask; why are you gutting it?
There's many threads on here about it, and it doesn't seem worth it to me.

GUT IT! It sounds good.
Use a plasma to open the top then use a torch to completely clean the inside. Next tig the top back together and go.
No you don't have to rejet.

Is there any HP gains by gutting it or doing it just for sound. I would like to see dyno proof not seat in the pants or card in the spokes theories.

I contemplated this mod over the Summer and we had a long post about it on here. I changed my mind and kept it stock. I agree that the extra noise does sound good for a while, but on long trips I thought it would get annoying, and it will most certainly piss off land owners that have to hear it too. Vermont has really clamped down on exhaust mods of any sort, $1000 fine if caught, and as I get older I begin to understand why.

By gutting everything all your left with is an empty box and is going to be to loud to ride or we talking a sweet sound..

It'll be lighter too.

It will sound much better and not to loud. Most all aftermarket cans are hollow anyways, only they cost 400-500 bucks and claim the 3-5lbs in weight savings. That weight difference is minimal or a 1/4 tank of gas. Gutting your can or buying aftermarket will not make a riding difference in HP it will just sound better.

The "quiet" aftermarket cans are not hollow. The full race might be, I don't know, but I've heard and ridden a fully gutted RX1 and they are A LOT louder. They sound great, don't get me wrong. Sounds just like a big CC crotch rocket with a straight pipe (I wonder why???) but they ARE loud and loud gets trails shut down.

I have been researching this topic on this site for a week or two. I would agree that it seems that the only significant change wold be sound. The wieght maybe an advantage if you are doing other wieght reduction modifications.
I have another desire for doing this. I hate the pipes hanging off the side of the sled. I have scratched the side pipe covers up with my boots from knealing on the seat when riding off trail. The pipes out the side looked cool to me at first but now they are in my way. I would like to modify the can so that the pipes exit below the tunnel on a shorty 03 RX-1. Advantges of loss of wieght, getting the pipes out of my way, and still muffling the exchaust be outputting inside the snow flap.
Any ideas if there would be any problem with this mod??

Another advantage would be no more hot pipes to worry about when covering the sled.

Bottom line is that if your going to cut into the stock can just clean it out completely! It will not be that loud or loud enough to close trails!
The stock can is larger than an aftermarket and still does a fair job at muffling the sound even when gutted.
