Round One of New-To-Me Phazer Project

Its mid-February, and here in MN that means the season could end at any time, all it would take is a few days of close to, or above freezing to zap whats left of the snow on the trails. With that in mind, I decided to hold off on the major upgrades and changes to the Phazer until next fall, and just get her serviced and tightened up. I thought I share what is done, or is being done this weekend, and ask you people if there is anything else u can think of that I should do while I've got her this far:

Relocated Speedo/Display
New Exhaust Donuts
Fresh CR9EK Plugs
UP Bushman spindle saver kit
UP Bushman steering kit
Rear Shock Rebuilt & Revalved (softer)
New balljoints (LCA)
Oilite a-arm bushings
New Front subframe (OG had a bit of a bend to her)
Replace Tunnel Block Off (original one was kindd ghetto)
change chaincase oil
change engine oil & filter
Loctite Starter bolts

I replaced the short steering link that you can see when the tank is off - about 8" long and reminds me of a chicken bone. (Steering rod 8GC-23828-00-00)
BTW, was there any exhaust wrap/shield mat'l left on yours inside the aluminum shield that covers the flex pipes? My top piece was completely rotted.

why did the link need to be replaced?

There was nothing on the aluminum shield covering the flex pipes? There was some tiny pieces of what may have been a heat shield type material laying down in there. So im gonna need some type of heat shielding on there?

Yes there is a heat child that goes there, both top an bottom.

My link had a bit of slop in it so with 16,000Km I figured this would be a one time replacement. I think that completes every link being replaced in my steering.

Yes, mine was the same just a few pieces left from the top shield and apparently you can't get the mat'l from Yamaha w/o buying the full case. I replaced mine with some exhaust wrap sheet type mat'l rated to 1000F and shaped some thin aluminum to keep it in place. Maybe it will melt but shouldn't be any worse than the original.
Did you use copper donuts?

mine has 4200 on the clock, so I think I'll hold off on replacing the link for now. I didnt notice a lot of play in it.

I'll have to check around for heat shield material. I wonder if it would be possible to put the shielding on top of the cover instead? Seems like it would last longer that way?

I didnt use copper donuts this time. I have em on the Apex, and planned to do em on the Phazer. However, my cousin was down visiting us and we wanted to go out on a ride. I just grabbed OEM ones from the dealer so we could hit the trails. I plan on doing copper once these OEM ones go out again.

That might be a good idea and protect it somehow to keep it dry because apparently the stuff don't stand up well to wet conditions.

I would pull off the secondary clutch and put some fresh grease in the upper jack shaft bearing and the lower speedo drive bearings. Super easy to do. G.B.

Good call on the bearings. I checked them for play and they seem good, but adding some fresh grease is a good idea.

side note: dealership just called. My balljoint recall wont be done today as scheduled. My control arms were too worn, so Yamaha is footing the bill for new ones. Kinda bittersweet since I would have had everything I needed to get her back on the trail by Saturday, but at least I get brand new control arms. Not sure I care about that too much since the original ones were fine.

i'd love to slap a freeride under her, but that is going to have to wait. Not only are funds getting tight, but Im still not sure if I am going to stretch her out to a 136" with the tip up extensions I have.

I cant win!

First the control arm situation which delays me to tuesday, now the mail just came and went minus the package with the rest of the parts I was expecting. I guess you cant trust USPS expected delivery dates for priority?

still waiting on the control arms from yamaha dealer, but in the meantime I've got everything swapped over to the new subframe and installed the UP Bushman steering bushing kit. Can anyone tell me if the sway bar ends tip up, or down? I cant remember!

odd, photo wont upload. Too heavy of a server load?

Sway bar ends curve up.

Did you buy a new or used subframe?
