XTX was brought in for 300 mile maintenance and chain case tension was checked. Today with 480 miles on sled, was doing 50 mph when lost power to track. Immediately after, it sound like a cement mixer filled with bricks. Trailered to dealer a couple of hours ago.

The guys who this happened to can you look through the glass oil level spy to see if the chain is all folded up on the bottom or not. That will give an idea if it is chains and shafts failing or it could be just the servo motor acting up? We need a manual reverse lever.

That sucks. Two in two days. There better not be a pattern forming.
actually three i think. 2blu2u had it happen as well.

Chain Case

Just talked with a guy on the trail yesterday. His son's Viper 278 miles chain case failure. Had just happened day before so he did not have any further information

That bites. Looks like I might have to go in and add the YES for 5 years or sell it and pick up another 1200. Come on yamaha! This is 8ull$hit.

Sure sounds like cat quality is affecting these sleds. That is what everyone worried about. Does that make 4?

Do we know if it is certain color or maybe production spec?

id like to know not so much which sleds are effected, but more so what is actually happening. if you open the chaincase up will they not warranty it anymore?

The scary part about this is were such a small percentage of riders that use the forums vs the guys who don't if there are 4 on here how many are there?

Our viper has around 400 miles now at 190 hp.

Two were XTX models as stated in their posts. Not sure about the other two.

I rode today with some buddies and all we rode were ditches. I have 120 on mine now and so far so good. Does worry me.

A couple on the forums in the first few days of rideable conditions, is a pattern. Considering that the chain case is at least essentially a cat unit, we have seen a ton of those failures in the sort time that chassis has been out.

To me what is more troubling is that these issues are happening after Yamaha put apparently a ton of time into this chassis to make sure it works.

This is terribly concerning. I just bought this viper and spent another 10 k on turbo and other parts to convert to a mountain sled. last thing I need is a chain case pileup and a $2000 helicopter ride home. I have yet to get the turbo on or extend it. Running stock excpet for 38" a arms. Kinda scared to touch it after reading this. I have learned that if it is possible, it will happen to me.

loose clamps, bolts not long enough to catch nylocks, and stripped/cheap hardware I can live with if I had to, these are farily minor annoyances which are fairly easily corrected.... Grenading chaincases are not. I certainly hope this is very isolated, but I feel like Yamaha needs to step up in a major way here in order to convince me to consider the Viper

and to think I was at the dealership today sitting on one, seriously considering just going for it since the financing is all in-line and just waiting on my decision and a purchase agreement faxed over.
