I am sure this has been asked before, but since the search does not work very well I have a few questions. So for those of you who have put a 16" track in an 03/04 tunnel:

1. If you had to do it again, what would you do different?

2. I have the 1/4" rear drop mounts and have cut the chain case bolts, anything else I need to do to get this thing to fit?

3. How do you like it?

Thanks,

J.

No it all, i have measure my track and its 15-15/16 and paaddle width is 15 3/4

Since you have slim bracket

I put an 05 skid in mine as well but you might want to look at the tunnel bracing that is riveted to the inside of the tunnel at the front mount
Mine has about a hair of clearance and I am going to have to pull the skid just to cut the reinforcment plates off

Thanks for the info. I will look at that front bracket. One area of concern I have is the chaincase nut that is rivited to the tunnel. That thing sticks out about 1/4" and is in the direct path of the track. I did cut about 1/4" off the bolt so it is flush with the end of the nut, but that nut still concerns me. Did you have to grind the nut down at all and if you did, how did you secure the bolt in place? The nut has a secure mechanism on it and if I grind it down the secure mechanism will be gone. Maybe locktite will work good enough to secure the bolt in place.

i was thinking to put a carriage bolt from inside with a nut on the chaincase side.

Front bracket is clear for me since i put a k-mod bully dog suspension.

Jonny Rocket, did you shave weight on your sled too with the addition of the 16'', can wait to try mine... up to 24 inch here... but sled still not completed

The carriage bolt is not a bad idea.
The 162x16x2.25" maverick track I am putting on is only 1 lb heavier than the 159x15x2" track I took off. Not bad considering I have a much larger footprint.
I am in the same boat as you. I am waiting for my 3" pitch drivers which are on backorder from Yamaha until Nov 15th. And one of our ski lodges is opening up this weekend. That means about 3-4' of snow on the hills.

Since I'm not talking English as my first language I must ask what is a carriage bolt ???

Can somebody post a picture of one such a bolt ? :?:

Here it is, usually used for fastening wood together. Made of soft metal typically, but I think you can buy grade 5 too.

i used carriage on my vector put the mav in it to this year.ran all last year with a 16 wide & the stock bolts & nuts riveted to the tunnel just measued the width from bolt to other side of tunnel grind bolt till you have just over 16 inches. :4STroke:

I did end up using a carriage bolt in place of one of the chain case bolts. It worked out very nice. I wish I would have taken pics. All I did was drill out the 2 rivets holding the bolt in place. Then I took a dremel and made the round hole square so the carriage bolt would fit. Then I inserted the bolt from the tunnel side. It was a perfect fit and now there is no nut for the track to rub on.

After a weekend out in 4 feet of bottomless powder I am now getting serious about a bigger track. Although I was outclimbing the zx chassis 800's and the M7's, the new 800 revs seemed to have a slight advantage. I seemed to have a power advantage, but didn't float as well. There were times I had to move all 4ft of new snow to crest a hill. I am considering a 159 x 16 x 2in Challenger. I already went to the trouble to press antiratchets, so I am shying away from the 3in pitch Maverick. Anyone have experience with this track? I would hate to destroy boondock and trail performance. I know the Apex seems to boondock well, but they tipped the rails up. I'd hate to end up with something that handles like a Polaris 900 or a Doo 1000.

i have rode my 16 '' this week-end, not in powder, about 6'' of powder, but i saw big improvement, 1 inch really float more.

But i have to say 50 lbs down and new suspension help a lot.
