I picked up my 2005 RX-1 the night before from my dealer as my w-arm broke in several places. I had one stud that had pulled through which I noticed 500 miles ago but the track was still in good shape. I rode the sled that night. The next morning I went out and things had frozen up on the lake so the track was hooking up in the hard snow real nice. I was wide open for a half mile or so pulling triple digits when BAMN the track let loose. No brakes heading towards a creek. Luckily the sled stayed straight and did not roll, it also stopped in plenty of time before the creek. Thank God that sled did not roll! Here is what was damaged:

Snow flap
Seat has a small tear as the track came up and over
Both of the exhaust caps are scrapped up
The tail light frame is scrapped up
The red exhaust protector broke
The exhaust pipes have scapes in the front, with possible holes..
The can in the back is scrapped up
The rear grab bar is bent
Not sure yet on the tunnel, parts look to be bent but not sure if it is just the frame for the rear flap

I am hoping insurance will step in here!

Now, for the question. Why did the track rip? I was running 144 studs up the middle. Stock track. The studs were 1" long. Could it be that the studs were not digging in enough? Meaning the track would spin fast when taking off and then the weight would transfer to the rear where the paddles would bend causing the studs to grip therefore causing more stress then normal on the track? Or was it that the pull through was the result of all of this? The track had about 4,200-4,300 miles on it. Any thoughts?

It looks like you speared the track.the cross bars are broken at the windows.lincoln

I wonder if breaking the w-arm had something to do with it then....

Exactly, that is what happened to me...I speared a track TWICE!

Have a look at the plastic rail tips on your skid. I had one tip come off on two separate machines and speared the track and almost killed myself each time. I don't trust the rivets that hold them in. I replaced the rivets with bolts and inspect them regularly (didn't learn the first time).

You have the right amount of mileagefor the tips to be worn, loosen up and fall off.

Stud pull through possibly the cause.
When tracks are run on ice or low snow(no lube) conditions
the track is heated up and results in internal damage.
Stud pull through will kill a track eventually. But I`ve seen
friends sleds go many miles with tear outs but you have to be careful.
Time bomb waiting to k-boom.
Was susp + track checked over when fixed/reassembled?

Glad you weren't hurt. Did it tear at the pull-thru?

I have quite a few of the parts you'll need to fix that. Pm me if you are interested.

Ya,the rail tips on the old MSRX used rattle off and spear the track.you,re lucky the track broke. The one that speared on the MSRX sent the rider a 100 feet out front.

Yep, I had a MSRX. I went over the handlebars when mine speared and the machine almost ran me over.

Last spring, I was ripping down the lake at 180km/hr on my SRX short track. When I slowed right down and hit a little bump the track locked up due to a rail tip falling off and spearing the track and wrecking it. Thank God, the machine was doing a manageable speed.

Me too! I am not sure, it does not look like it, I have not really looked into the cause to closely, I was to upset.

You guys might be on to something here. I picked up my sled Friday night and I rode it about 70 miles. That night I checked out the suspension and found the left rail cap up front was missing! I went to the dealer first thing Saturday morning. They put on a new cap for me. It was no more then 5-10 miles after they put the cap on that the track blew. Maybe when the cap came off Friday night when I was riding, is when a lot of damage occurred to the track. I did not look at the track closely on Saturday to know for sure. Here are more pictures of the track. Maybe someone can tell how or why it ripped.....

I had lost a track on my polaris at high speed 105 mph.I had a stud pull through on the outer belt and thats where the track came apart.Luckily I only lost about a 3' section of the outer belt so I could still stop but it shure chewed the sled up while I was slowing down, tunnel heat exchanger ,snow flap. Not nearly as bad as your sled though.Thats why I only stud the center belt now.

I was told by one of the major stud manufacturing companys that if you get 3500 miles out of a studded track your doing good, which makes sense because there is allot more stress on the track.

Again, I would bet on that you speared the track. I am surprised you lasted 70 miles without spearing before and yes you probably did some damage. Are your cap(s) still on as we speak??

According to your pics, the rail went inside your window causing the damage. Maybe the new cap fell off too or the one that wasn't replaced.

I just replaced the caps on my SRX skid with brand new ones ($45 bucks each) and bolted them on instead of rivets.

A friend of mine speared his brand new track last winter on his Mountain Max going wide open on the lake. He had just installed some Hartman kit with the extension and speared it the first ride. He did the same kind of damage as you. It had something to do with the track being very loose and catching the rail tips.

Just got the estimate. Just under $5,200.

I am not sure if the caps are still on as I dropped the sled off and took a couple pictures of the damage. I did not think about the rails causing the damage so I never checked the caps again.

So now the question becomes, who is responsible for the repair cost?
