I know they make a 12v adapter in which you can plug in your shield on the Apex. Has anyone used it? Does it work well?
Has anyone wired their shield to a source under the hood? If so, to which source/wire did you connect into? Any pics or instructions/advice on how you may have did it would be appreciated.
Thanks.

On my 2007 Attak, the dealer spliced the positive into the blue/red stripe wire at the handlebar which provides the power for the brake light. The negative is connected to a bolt on the riser. Works well, you can hide the conncetion, plus it is only powered when the engine is started.
I could not find this wire in the diagrams. I discovered it was the brakelight wire while I was resplicing due to a bad connection. The colour coding may be different on the Apex.

pull apart the electical conection for the accessory plug, cut and stip ends of electric shield wires and jam them into the accessory conector and snap it back together. I have always done my electic shields this way and have never had a problem. No fuses are needed as the 12v accessory plug is already fused.

cheap and easy way to fix it
I ordered one from a catalogue.
it cost $6.95 and it has a light to indicate that it is on.
Dealers also sell such a part but it is more money.
I can't remember the name of the catalogue but it is one of the big ones that sends me a catalogue every year.
good luck

Buy the skidoo visior plug kit, mount it beside the 12v outlet, splice into the wires for the factory outlet, and your done. Looks like a factory installation, even comes with a heated visior decal, and leaves the 12v outlet free for GPS, cell phone, etc....

I adapted an optimate battery charger harness directly to the battery. I soldered in the visor portion and took advantage of the fused part of the optimate.
Advantage: always on, so if I leave the helmet plugged in while we take a trailside break, it should be fog/ice free when we take off.
I had a bunch of trouble with my heated shield last year that was wired to the tail light circuit, but I could never determine if that was a wiring problem or if the shield was the problem. this year I've eliminated both possiblities with a new shield and direct wiring...

If you wife to the tail light, be sure it is the tail light and not the BRAKE light..... (i did that once)

Tapped into the 12v plug myself, if I have problems with fuses blowing will just stick a 4A or 5A fuse in, they are the only things on that circuit anyway. Personally, I would not wire it up without a fuse either, just imagine if somthing shorted....

The blue/red wire I mentioned earlier is always hot. It is the power for the brake light but obviously the light is off until the circuit is completed by pressing the brake. I can't see any reason why fuses would blow using this setup. This should work.
Any comments? Maybe I am missing something. If so, I can change to another place.

I wire off the power wire from the headlight switch. Any circuit used on the handlebars is already fused at the panel box under the cowlings. Never had a problem with tapping into that wire and grounding to the handlebar bolt.

Much easier to just buy the cigarette style adapter from Yamaha that has the RCA adapter pre attached.

I had the same problem last year, I tried a few different places and the battery with a fuse is your best "no-hassle" bet.

Direct to the Battery with a fuse as close to the battery as possible.
