I am 250lbs and am going to change to the heavy spring, which I have read alot about here.

How do you change the spring and how difficult is it to change?

Specialty tools ect?

I am trying to decide if I can do it myself, or if I should have dealer do it.

Thanks.

It's not that hard if you have a good spring compressor and a bearing spreader.

I have a pair of standard coil spring compressor that are intended to hook on to the coils. These will work, but you can't hook both ends on to the coils (without damaging the shock). That is where the bearing spreader comes in...

Here's what I have done (changed 4 springs - different sleds...):

- Remove RA control from the tunnel, loosen rear axle & track tension, remove rear bolt from weight transfer rod, unbolt front and rear skid bolts, and pull the skid out
- Remove the shock.
- Install the bearing spreader right behind the cam adjuster "teeth". Tighten it finger tight.
- Hook one end of the spring compressors to the bearing spreader, the other to the spring.
- Compress the spring, remove the spring retainer and remove the spring and spring compressors. If the spring compressor doesn't have enough threads to be removed, re-install the spring and install the compressor one coil shorter.
- Decide what position you want the c-clip set to (c-clip is under the cam). At 250 with the 6.5 kg/mm spring (I'm guessing...) you'll probably find the middle position best (once the spring settles in).
- Slip the new spring on and compress it using the same technique. Install the spring retainer.
- Remove the tools and reinstall the shock and skid (reverse the first step).

Here is a picture of the spring compressor and bearing spreader installed on the shock (this pic is on the snowmobile when I was changing the c-clip position). You can see two of the c-clip grooves exposed on the left of the cam assembly.
