Quiet, no snow ingestion airbox mod. UPDATE ON FIRST POST.

This is what I have come up with to pickup a few horsepower and remain quiet. I wanted a fresh cold air intake with a HP gain that did not ingest snow and remained quiet. Some of you wanted pics, so here they are. I picked up some black PVC elbows from the hardware store and welded them into the front of the airbox using a torch to heat up a screwdriver, spare strips of pvc from the extra amount of elbow I cut off for filler rod. It works sort of like gas welding metal, only using a hot tool to fuse the plastic together. I used 2-1.5 inch black PVC elbows, 2-uni brand foam filters with K+N pre-filters to keep the snow out. It makes no extra intake noise with this setup, unlike the holes I started with in front of the airbox under the factory foam filter that I have since blocked off due to the noise they made and making the engine too lean and sluggish. Its turning 11,000-11,100 RPM's. I'm going to the Carlisle XS805 belt, which slows the engine right into the 10,600-10,700 range due to its ability to bite the clutches harder.



UPDATE ON THIS MOD AFTER RUNNING AND TESTING IT FOR SOME TIME:

I have since gone back to the stock airbox after seeing some inconstancies with doing any airbox mods. Even adding fuel to try to get back some throttle response, I was just not happy with the running performance and inconsistencies. I believe it was causing issues with the air temp sensor and its compensation factors. Don't know for sure it wasn't also reducing the intake pulsations and loosing lower in the field at different RPM's also. All I know is it does like the stock airbox much better and the consistency is now back to running good in any air temp and condition. Also lost fuel mileage running the mod 11-13.5 MPG. Stock box fuel mileage is back now to 15-16 MPG. Thought I would let you all know. Just did not perform as I had hoped for.


ALSO UPDATE ON THE CARLISLE BELT:


Another waste of money. They wear way to fast like 100 miles fast.
The NEW Yamaha belt 8DN-01 is however a very good belt and dropped my RPM's down back into the powerband and picked my performance up greatly, like to the tune of 4 MPH in 1000 feet over a 8DN-00 belt with 1500 miles on. Very nice belt the new 8DN-01. :-o

like the idea of the filter,when i did mine i was worried about snow dust but i tried it and found that when i follow someone really close and eat some snow dust its usually only for a ways,then we will stop and chat about the "run" and just the heat from the motor will melt the snow off the foam in the air filter,i have purchased a sheet of the slp pre filter material but i never bothered finding a way to install it because the amount of snow has never been a problem,granted i never run in deep snow unless i miss a corner (thats rare) but would assume if you do a lot of boondocking my airbox mod wouldnt be for you,knappattack....with the way you put those elbows in a guy could easily run tubing right out to the front shroud and have a real forced air system at speed,suppose it would help ? the system on the vipers seemed to make a difference so it probably would............looks cool for sure and deep snow surely wouldnt bother your system

I was at Mikes place yesterday and looked at his air box mod. it looks awsome. think i'm going to try it on my 06 GT.
 
170 plus, You would have to run over 160 MPH for any type of ramming to do any good. The Pro-Stock cars and bikes use it for a advantage. I tried it on the asphalt sled and did not see any gain. It takes huge speed to use the minimal amount of pressure increase to gain HP. I don't remember the exact #'s the cars gained but it was in the 35-40 HP increase on a 1250 HP car, the downside was it took like 25 HP in drag driving the hood scoop needed to pressurize the intake. Had two feet of fluffy snow last week in the UP and was busting trail for the group without a hiccup. I had started with something similar to the holes in your airbox 170, but didn't like the small bit of added noise from that. Also was harder to filter the snow out. I added pre-filter to them but just didn't like the noise, so they got covered when I went with the uni-filters. All I care about is cold fresh intake air with no noise and a solid HP increase without snow ingestion. This is way better then modifying the cover so everyone can see and hear it!
 
I like the idea of the filters. It looks good. What did you use for the grill material in the nose? Did you noticed much snow getting through the grills last weekend?
 
I was running in 2 1/2 ' of powder the other day and it filled the noze cone full.
KnappAttack Where did u get those filters, U wouldn't have part no. 4 the filter and pre-filter would u.
 
It may get a slight bit more snow in the nose, but it does no harm as the filters won't let anything thru. Also notice in the pictures, I have cut holes in the plastic protector nose plate and glued pre-filter material on to let cold air get into the factory inlet behind there. Filter and pre-cleaner from HPE. www.hiperf.com Part# for filters, UP-4229 and pre-cleaners, 201-816. Guys, this was just some stuff that I had kicking around. You could use any filter and pre-cleaner that would not let the snow and dirt in without a problem. The grill material in the nose cone came from a hood grill that I took out of my turbo sled last year. Also plastic welded it in place using a hot screwdriver.

Mike, did you put any pre-filter around the screens in the front.

so you like the carlise belt alot eh?...I really want to try one......can you give me a comparison of size VS stock 8DN-00 belt?.

Dan, The Carlisle belt is a different design and hard to measure due to the large top cogs and relived top section. If you try to measure it with a calipers it appears to be narrower so it needs to be set in the clutch and compared with a feeler gauge. When done this way it is .020 wider than the 8DN-00. As for length, it seems to be a slight bit longer as I had to add .040 washers to the driven to get it ridding higher for proper deflection. Again, impossible to compare the two for length due to the larger top cog. When you run it in the field it will pull R's down 300-400 over the 8DN which should mean it is hooking on the clutches harder. I can't confirm that, as I haven't run against anything to compare the two. I have seen just putting a new belt on pulls the R's down but never to that degree. My good friend and neighbor with his RX-1 swears the Carlisle to be quicker and faster over the 8DN. I believe he could be correct. The Carlisle is super flexible too.

Mike,thanks for info...did you see that DAYCO now has belts out too?....i thought carlisle bought out dayco??....but I see dayco now has their name back on belts too...

I also noticed the dayco and carlisle belts are pricey when compared to the stock yammie belts....id really like to try one of these on the radar gun for top speed runs....i just might do that later on this season to test side by side with stocker.
