Just got back from the U.P. and put 600 plus miles on my sled. I was impressed with the way the sled ran on the 5W-30 Tech 2000 (fully synthetic) oil and the Fram filter. Absolutelty no issues and the sled ran fine.

How much are the Fram filters?

I purchased a Vesrah filter from my local Yammi dealer, OEM Japanese replacement filter for street bikes and Yammi snowmobiles.

I paid around $8 for the filter.

Fram filter I have on the sled is PH9715. Cost was about $3.50.

If you rode in the U.P. this last week I Know I must have seen you. I to rode over 600 plus and only seen a hand full of sleds. I almost seen more gromers than sleds. I rode out of Seny Sunday til Thursday. Only 2 of us in Seny the first few days.

I've read the forums on filters and, in general, Fram is poor quality. Surprisingly, WalMart's SuperTech filters have been on the better side.

If I could find a Purolator PureOne that fits AND fits a cap wrench in the opening, I'm getting one. I tried one that fits my JetSki and while it fit, it wouldn't with the cap wrench on it. The wrench is a must in my opinion (I refuse to take it in to get a filter off).

Fram filters are garbage. I would not recommend anyone to run them. Use a pure one, supertech or a yamaha filter. 100% synthetic oil of any brand is ok in my books as long as the right weight is used.

How do you know this as a fact, compared to other aftermarket filters?

You would almost have to do an oil analysis using the Fram filter vs another filter to even make such a claim, unless you have some other insights.

Just want to know the facts!

Sled Dog,

I have used Fram and Tech 2000 filters for years in my vehicles. Each oil change on the vehicles were around 3500 miles or better without any type of failure. My sled will have it's filter change once a season or every 1.5 - 2K miles.

From looking @ the link with all of the filters cut open you can see that they are not all the same.

But, how much filtering element is needed to keep the oil clean over an avg. season of riding?
You would need to cut open a used filter and measure how much foreign material was captured from the so called best to the so called worst in the group of filters available. Could be for most applications ,we have some degree of overkill.
BUT, if both oil cleaners are readily available for about the same $, the choice would be easy.

Why dont you just by the two and take them apart with a dremmel saw. Trust me the fram is junk.

Sled Dog,

I am not disagreeing with you that all filters are made alike. This is why Yamaha has incorporated a screen at the bottom of the oil resevoir, which filters out deposits not trapped by the oil filter. I make sure I clean this element during every oil change.

If something is large enough to get caught in the screen and not by the filter I would be VERY CONCERNED

My big question is why skimp on oil and filter when you may only change it once or twice a year, how much are you really saving? $5-6? and ontop of that you are helping to drive the smaller retailers out of town by getting stuff at wal-mart. before wal-mart came to our town we had 4 large retailers, 4 large grocery stores, and a real nice downtown shopping area now all we have left is wal-mart and only two grocrey stores and a ghost town downtown. I personally go out of my way to avoid spending any money at wal-mart.
