Clutch noise

Yes they have, since 2003, the RX-1 rattled as well, same clutch.

If it is the same rattle I had in my 2005 they have a kit and it was still under warenty no time limit the kit was only about 12 bucks, laber was 1.5 an yamaha payed .7 I payed the dealer the difference when he did my stator I have the service recall on my other computer dealer didnt belive me till I showed it to him .steve

No, but you have to remove the side cover and clutch cover to get to it. It may be easier to work on a workbench tho.

By the way u wont get the noise out of the 08 clutch i have been battling this issue since my sled was new in 08, My clutch rattles to beat the band, I stuck in 250 dollars to rebuild still makes noise, took my buddies clutch off his 05 vector which is real quite and put on mine, still rattled like crazy, then i put my clutch on his sled, it was quite as can be, I found that the 08 stub shaft splines have alot more back and forth play than the 05-07 and I believe that is where the excessive noise is coming from. a yamaha rep admitted that the 08-09 cranks were from a differnt supplier, so I was told, thats the way it is and live with it . :o|

Then I have a different kit, no O-rings involved, only some thin steel bushings to go behind the U-shaped plastic sliders inside the clutch.

What is a stub shaft spline? I can start my sled in the garage and then walk 3 houses away from my garage down the street and still hear the clutch rattling. Mine also rattles noticably in the 5500-6200rpm range. At those rpm's it is the predominant noise radiating from my sled. I can't believe how crappy it sounds.

metalicat, The stub shaft is the part where your primary clutch bolts on to it, its a short piece that is splined and slides onto your main crankshaft, Take your clutch and try rotating it left and right, mine has about 4mm of back and for play, earlier vectors dont have as much play. you can hear a clunking sound of splines if u move clutch back and forth real fast, thats where the noise is coming from Yamaha just doesnt want to admit it. I was a Yamaha mech for 23 years, I talked to alot of Yamaha service techs in my day and Nobody ever wants to admit there is a problem. :o|

I have the same excessive play on the spline shaft since new on my 2008.
I wonder if this will be corrected for 2010?
This excessive play can"t be good over time something has to wear out.

I would say that my clutch has around 2mm of movement. But the rattle itself is from the clutch, right? I mean, the play in the spline or crank or whatever must be what causes the primary to rattle so much.

Yes all the play in splines and the harmonics of the 3 cylinder engine make it noisy, I am contacting Yamaha custermer service this week about this, I know that this is going to be a issue, I have had many yamahas since 1984 and this is a real ugly problem, I have switched clutches from other machines ,put my clutch on my buddies 05 vector nice and quite, {normal vector sound, Take off your primary clutch and run engine, it is so sweet sounding and then put your clutch back on Makes the machine sound like sh.. I have 3500 miles on my 08 ltx and it has been getting worse for the past 1500 miles, If this keeps getting worse, I have a 8000 dollar boat anchor on my hands wont be able to sell or trade it with that ugly sound Yamaha knows they put different cranks in 08-09s I think its time they fix there mistake. I will keep everyone posted on what happens with Yamaha,

Mine seemed to get worse around the 2000 mile mark too. I once thought the clunking, rattling noise I was hearing while riding my sled was from the valvetrain. On my last ride at around 50 mph I snuck my head forward of the windshield on the right side (away from the clutch) and all was silent. Did the same to the clutch side and I heard the 5500 rpm Vector rattlesnake-shake...all from the clutch. I am actually starting to feel embarassed about pulling away after stopping in front of a bunch of parked sledders, since instead of hearing a nice 4 stroke exhaust note they are being treated to the symphony that my rox-in-a-box clutch is playing - like a Diesel truck with noisy injectors on a 20 deg below morning.
