Ok guys, need some imput. I have a chance to part with my 06 Nytro and jump into a 08MTX, cheap.

Here are my concerns. I live in Michigan, at times I don't have extremely deep snow. The guys and I are doing more off trail riding and playing in the fields, so I want to jump up to a long track. Is 153 way to big for Michigan or am I safer going with a 144.

I have been looking at the 09 XTX, but here is one big thing. I can buy the 08MTX right now for 5800otd. (new)

I know that with the MTX I am going to loose top end speed, oh well. My riding style has changed over the past few years, yes at times I like to light the whick and go,but anymore I have more fun playing in the woods and carving through the powder. I know with the 153 I will float better and have an advantage over my buddies 121 & 136. But at what cost?

Can you guys give me some ideas and things to think about with jumping up to a 153. (do I cut the lug heights, am I going to burn through hyfax to fast, trail wise would I loose my trail fun? ) HELP..... :o| :o|

Thanks guys

Go with the mtx just trim the lugs a bit go bigger gearing and add scratchers... Don't worry to much about top end they are not bad once you get it setup unless you runn on ice or long runs on hard packed, i ran better top end at last weekends races than the xtx.

That and the maverick tracks can be found for 150-200 if you keep your eyes open. The maverick is a track that folds the paddles over fairly quick. Cut one track down for low snow and keep one full height for mid season/good snow. You could also buy a power claw and cut the mav down but it will cost you more for the power claw. Take the money you save on buying the MTX and buy better shocks for the rear, and widen the front end out to trail width.

MTX

OK found some more out about the sled. (have just talked with the salesman on the phone)

08 MTX Blue, was ridden around the shop by the owner, has two hundred miles on sled. NO reverse.. Will sell it to me for 5800.

Is it worth it? I really want to go with a long track, just have yet to whether 153 is to long...

Did this sled have the same front end issues as the 121? How much more narrow is the front end? Do I look to change all the shocks too?

Advise???? :o|

If that 153 ends up being too much, you could buy xtx rails for 180 bucks a piece. The suspension pieces should bolt right up to the xtx rails.

Hey Dox

I have an 08 MTX as well, we ride in the U.P. maybe 3 or 4 times a winter. We try to head west 1 or 2 times as well.

I rode it stock 1 winter and decided to make a few changes.

1st got rid of the stock track, you have read it here a million times. I went with a powerclaw 162.

Next went with a mtn. Tamer rear susp. and last added rail extensions with 8" billet wheel kit.

We are riding in the same stuff you guys are and I decided to add more track. You can still ride it on the trail, although you wont be able to rocket thru the corners with it.

It is impossible to make a sled that is great in the pow and great on the trail IMO.

I would say if you find youself more off trail then on
buy It. Price sounds good to. Good luck!! :4STroke:

Thanks guys. Still not sure yet on which way I am going to go, but think I am going to lean towards the 09 XTX. In the long run I think it will be a better fit for me.

If anyone is in the market though for an MTX there is a blue 08 with 200 miles on it here in lower michigan. NO REVERSE though.

Thanks again guys.......

My cuz has a 09 XTX and I ride 08 MTX - XTX needs 1-3/4" track if you want to use it off trail the ripsaw is useless in the deep snow. XTX needs track, riser, and bars to be comfortable. The MTX Maverick cut down might be ok, I replaced mine with the challenger and I am very happy. Much better suspension on the XTX - shock package is a huge upgrade over the MTX shocks. You will be happy with both though!

Tough call. I have the 2008 MTX and have worked to make it more of a crossover sled. Kind of what you would be doing if you buy the MTX.

I would have loved the opportunity to buy a near new MTX at such a low price and use the savings to mod it to my liking.

That being said I haven't ridden an XTX and don't know if I'd be happy with that sled in stock form.

I've ridden both in deep snow conditions (same day) (2'-3') the extra length of the MTX will carry you way further with less effort than a XTX. I set up mine for crossover as well, it is much easier to take the MTX to a crossover than it is to make a XTX a good deep snow unit. JMO

What does it take to make an MTX a good crossover? What kind of clutching, gears, etc.?

Why are XTX rear shocks better than MTX? Are MTX too soft? Which rides plusher on groomed trails?

Thanks!!

I got an 09 XTX with the 1.75" backcountry track, raised bars and the Curve XS skis. . . . .go to both Western and Central UP 6-7 times a year and out to Togwotee for a week during "hillclimb season". . . . .and allthough there will never be a single machine that can be the "BEST" both on-trail and off. . . .I have absolutely zero complaints with how it's performed.

It does everything extreamely well within the UP off-trail - is a gas to ride on the trail when either getting to our favorite riding areas or when out with the wives and out West in late March does everything that's required other than lay down the highest mark.

I however weigh around 270 with a 144"x1.75" track and so if I'm thinkin I should be layin down the highest mark I'm either :drink: or riding with Oprah Winfrey and Martha Stewart :o|

For me anyway - the XTX was the clear choice

if i did more trail riding i would go with an xtx that being said I love my mtx as I can hammer the trails and have fun. For the riding there I would get the xtx and put a better track on it and maybe some wider skis and the trail tank and you would be set.

Picked up a 08 MTX late last Feb and was concerned with the same issues.
I cut down the lugs a little and put on a set of scratchers. Did 2300 kms with a lot of trail riding with a couple of trips on very hard packed trails. The scratchers work well. Replaced the hyfax at the end of the season just so I wouldn't have to do it in the fall. They only seem to wear in one place and then stop.
Love the sled. I had a 144 sabercat before and this sled works as well on the trail . Its great in the pow and the extra length over my 144 in not an issue at all. Top end is not too bad as well.
The only thing I will change is stiffer springs in the rear. Very soft. Good on the trail but not heavy enough for the play times.
Great sled for the price.
