Starting an Apex with a "Pull Strap"

Always wondered if the Apex can be started with a pull strap. I tried it tonight and it was easier than I thought!! Attached video clip..... ;)!

Now the real question... was it warm or stone cold? (I say warm). Although I've seen the video with the Phazer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7E3bUASfVCA , that is pretty good for yanking a 4 banger. We should all try it BEFORE we get stranded and carry a similar strap in out tool kits.

Was the engine warmed up, or just same temp as garage?

What kind of strap was that? I guess everyone should get one of those to keep with their tool kit. Nice tip btw!!!!!!

Funny timing that you just posted this video.

A Ski Doo rider buddy of mine that I was boondocking up in the mountains with yesterday looked over at me when we were takin a break and asked "Does that thing have a back up pull start like mine?".

I said no...but Im sure I could pull start it with a strap wrapped around the clutch if I had to.

He just shook his head and said...hmm (kind of like he didnt believe it could be done).

I would like for him to see this video...the smart #*$&@, lol.

I should have told him the same strap I could hypothetically start my sled with would be the one I carry to tow sleds like yours out with!!

i was thinking the three cylinder (and certainly carbureted 3) would be harder to do this with, longer stroke and 25% less cylinders firing. i figured it might be an alternative to jumpers which are worthless if the starting system takes a crap.

I experienced the sinking feeling this past weekend. Starter relay gave up the ghost suddenly, sled was warm. Wrapped the fabric end of a ratchet around the clutch three times,it fired up faster then I could completely unwind the strap. I did not think it would be that easy. I dont believe a dead cold motor would be that easy say at minus 10F.

This just happened to me on my 600 etec Renegade work sled on Monday. The start button would not engage and I was in the middle of nowhere. I just wrapped the pull cord (supplied) around the clutch and it fired up. It turns out a relay just went on it.

Anyway, I always wondered if my 4 strokes would start like that, especially my carbed RX. The sleds seem so hard to turn over just by turning the clutch.

I am also very interested in the strap used in the video.

Good idea to try it before you really need it. I need to do some looking as I'm pretty sure that at least one of my Yami sleds came with a strap in the tool kit when I bought it (all were new from the dealer).......

EDIT: I dug into my sled tool kits and it's my '05 Viper that came with a starting strap. ;)!

It was not stone cold because I rode it after I installed a new belt. I tried it again this morning at 18 degrees F and was able to start it again, but it required two attempts. The colder it gets the harder it will be to start, but at least I know I can do it if necessary. I will post a pic of the strap in a few minutes...... :Rockon:
