2005 VECTOR ER CHAINCASE OIL AMOUNT?

Sleds with reverse have a wider chaincase, so you fill to the top mark of the reverse side of the dipstick as per the owners manual. This will give the same amount of oil without reverse on the standard side of the dipstick. Filling to the max. mark using the non reverse side of the dipstick will overfill the chaincase.
This is absolutely correct!

Right out of the Vector service manual plus years of experience validating what the service manual says. I put 8.5 oz. in (measured) every time I drain and refill. The extra 1/2 oz. has never caused a problem for me.

Look on the belt guard. It will tell you 8.5oz.

CENA, here is a link from Yamaha's website for you to enter your sled model/year and view an owners manual online: http://www.yamahamotorsports.com/sport/service/viewmanuals/outdoor_manuals.aspx

It takes a minute to load, but I believe page 8-17 will explain the dipstick for you - (rev) on the stick is for models with reverse and (standard) is for non-reverse models. The dipstick may seem confusing, but I believe Yamaha did this as a cost savings way to save money and use one dipstick for two different chaincase's.

I went out to my snowmoshop and took a picture of the belt guard on my Vector and there is a decal showing 8.5 ounces for chaincase oil capacity. Same for my Apex. I also took a picture directly out of my service manual and it shows .26 quarts (same as 8.3 oz).

My chaincase is completely dry right now so i will certainly fill it up to the top of the rev line and report how much fluid it consumed. I was speaking with ulmer today and mentioned this. He said to go ahead and fill it all the way up. So it seems either way is ok. I will probably stick with what yammi recommends though.

This is insane guys.......3 oz. vs. 8 oz????!!!!!!!

Does the chaincase on anybody's Vector have a "vent tube"? (Refer back to CENA's previous post) WTF is a vent tube on a chaincase?

When you pour the oil into the case and you don't let it settle you can misinterpret the reading on the stick as "actual oil reading on the stick".

CENA - are you SURE you don't mean the oil tank and the sled taking 3 QUARTS of oil to fill the tank? The 2005 oil tank does have the infamous vent tube that if you don't put it back on it'll puke oil all over when you start the sled?

Chaincase has no venting. I agree with the wtf about this whole topic though. Fill it with 3oz, or three times that amount, or anything in between or so it would seem.

Put 8 - 8.5 oz in your chaincase and let it sit for 10 minutes. Pull your dipstick and oil will be touching the (rev) line.

Ok. Tonight I am dumping oil. Starting with 3, ending with 8. Will report back. I will take pics too, and let sit for 10 min before checking.

8.5oz is to the top of the standard line. Reverse took 3oz.
Thought I knew what I was talking about?? :dunno: Maybe not...LOL!
I checked my Apex again this morning and the oil was just barely touching the bottom arrow on the reverse side of the dipstick. I drained the chaincase into a measuring cup and a little over 6 oz came out. That's a little low, but there are not any visible leaks and I doubt that 2 oz of oil was still stuck to the gears, bearing and chain after sitting all summer. I added a little over 8 oz back in and let it sit while I had coffee. I then checked the stick and oil was touching the R on the word reverse. I think that will come down after running the sled and some of the oil stays stuck to the parts.

I also think Yamaha has changed the chaincase cover a few times, added extra bearings, etc. Maybe the changes have added volume and is why all the different readings on the dipstick? Who know's? I was just trying to help, but probably just caused confusion.

No idea. They may change chaincase designs without changing the dipstick. Or whatever. I know the apex has a different pn for the case.

So the spec for reverse sleds is 5.5oz +/- 2.5oz. Right now I have 7 in mine. It is at the low side of standard.

Here's a pic of my chaincase and both sides of the dipstick with 8.5 oz of oil:

i still have to put my chaincase on my 06 nytro with reverse on it back together, so am i just best putting in 8oz +- a half ounce and thats ok?

2 pages and theres still lots of confusion in this topic lol

IMO, putting in the 8.5 oz (250ml) shown on the belt guard is the safest bet. That's just me though.

8.5oz is to the top of the standard line. Reverse took 3oz.

Thank you for the verification! Sorry about the "vent tube" confusion. That sled was a friends Apex that had chaincase oil all over the place. I thought he had told me it came out a "vent tube".
