FYI the groomers went out for the first time in a long time on the trails north of Newberry. The snow is still a little thin and tender but the groomers were able to go through and leave snow without tearing up the trails. Paradise, MI looked like they had at least 10" of snow on the trails. :letsnow:

Scratch that, started today above freezing and its now 40F at about 3pm :o| :o| :o|

Trails are starting to look healthier again, supposed to get dumped on today and tomorrow.

Stu, I will be in newberry for 2 weeks starting on feb 3 till feb 18. I am coming from PA and will have a white RTX and a RX-1 painted like a 78 srx maybe you will see us. Hope the trails only get better.

franklin,

The trails are definitely starting to shape up. We are looking at about 2 ft of snow on the level and we've got highs in the single digits so I don't think its gunna melt anytime soon. I'll keep an eye out for ya!

WHA-HOO!! We gots lots o' da white stuff now! Its pretty cold here right now though (highs in the single digets Farenheight). Its cold enough that the snow squeaks as you walk on it. If you've ever experienced it that cold you know what I'm talkin about! :brrr:

Well the snow is definitely here to stay, averaging between 15" south of Newberry to nearly 3 ft of snow up by the Superior Shoreline. The trails are being groomed on a regular basis and seem to be in good condition. Here is a link to the TASA (Tahquamenon Area Snowmobile Association) website on trail conditions: http://www.superiorsights.com/tasa/trailreport.html

Happy sledding! -- Stu

Got out this weekend

The trails were really nice out north. County Road 422 was rough as always (not plowed or groomed) but the rest was in good shape. Made a stop at the hot dog stand on the trail to Seney/Grand Marais and business looked good! Met the groomer on the way back to home base; had plenty of snow on them even after being cuffed off. :letsnow:

Went out for a ride this weekend, the trails are nearly down to ice and dirt. The old logging trails seemed to be in fairly good shape, but the snow is really crusty. Currently that makes for a really good base. If we get the snow that is forecast, it should make for some excellent sledding all around!

Well we definitely got the snow, and should be outstanding for riding this weekend pretty much anywhere in the UP. For anyone coming up from/through Lower Michigan be forewarned, the wind is bad enough that the Mackinac Bridge was closed last night. Its open now, but they are still escorting high profile vehicles (semis w/ van trailers, buses, etc.). Take care, especially if pulling a big enclosed trailer. Happy sledding. -- Stu

Well the trails are still holding out pretty well, even after being pounded this past weekend. The conditions were so good I saw tons of sleds and trailers in the staging areas and along the trails. I spent most of my time in the marshland north of Newberry that is between County Road 407 (Deer Park Road) and M-123. It was great, lots of snow and nearly smooth as glass in a lot of places. We got some snow on Sunday night into Monday but is was so windy (40mph gusts!) that most of the snow that fell has drifted up. Things are pretty cold and stable right now but they are calling for highs in the Low 40s for this weekend so we shall have to see. -- Stu

Went for a ride on Saturday (March 10) and the side roads were bare (ride banks where ya can). The trails were still in ok shape but the warm weather on Sunday and Monday have really turned them to slush and mud. The forecast for the weather looks to be daytime temps near and above 40 through Thursday. The highs are supposed to get back below freezing for friday but the chance of snow is fairly slim so I think the riding will be pretty tough next weekend. -- Stu

I went sledding out north by Lake Superior on Saturday and there was decent snow in some places but the trail was bare where it wasn't tree covered. The snow was really hard so landing jumps wasn't much fun and the slides on the sleds w/o ice scratchers were getting pretty hot. We did get about 3" of new snow on Monday but it won't stick long because the highs are reaching into the 40s. Unless a big turn around happens, I'd say the season is pretty much over in the Newberry Area. -- Stu

Just a little update, there is still lots of snow from that last snowfall here BUT the trails that run across private property have the gates locked and the groomers are all put away snug in their garages for the season. The businesses around this area are really hurting because the snow season is basically over and it's too snowy/slushy/muddy for the summer tourist season to begin. I saw some tracks in the ditch from someone who tried to do some ditch banging and lemme tell ya, they got wet. As I said before, there is snow out there, better as you get towards Lake Superior, but it won't last long. The ground isn't very froze up and they are talking highs back up into the mid-40s by tomorrow.

Hey all,
40s and raining here, calling for 60s this weekend. There are places out north with snow (about 4 feet or more) but the stretches aren't long enough to be worth the time and effort to trailer to. See ya all next winter! -- Stu
