Been slacking on the pictures lately, but here is where it's at. Got it assembled up to the turbo. Getting close now. Just hoping the weather cooperates to accommodate getting this thing out a couple times.
Getting close now. Had to make one more round to the dealer for a couple small pieces, and found a bad jackshaft bearing that is holding me up from finishing the chaincase. But once that stuff comes in, shouldn't be more than an hour away from being ready for the trail. Fired it up today and...
Here's tonight's progress. We're getting the new chassis moving in the right direction now. Started by getting it up on the stand and ready to finish riveting the bulkhead to the tunnel and right tunnel side in.
Welded up one tiny crack in the back of the tunnel side, then got it riveted...
Here's the latest, been busy the last few weeks trail riding and getting caught up on some other projects, but making good progress now. I'm thinking we're only a couple weeks away from having it ready to fire up and make some test passes (ice permitting).
Got the running board edges all...
A couple weeks ago my brother wrecked his 2011 Apex XTX pretty badly. We were running 70+ mph in the snowdust when he hit a snowplow ridge. He was fine, but the sled did multiple rolls and endos resulting in:
Broken bulkhead
All a-arms bent
Tunnel bent
Rear suspension bent
Broken windshield...
Starting to make a mess now..... got the running board edges mostly finished and have moved on to wiring. Set the motor in temporarily just for routing purposes. The wiring is all new because I'm going away from the stock ignition to an MSD setup. The only pieces of the stock system I'm using...
Worked on the foot holds today, mounted seat, and bumper. The foot holds on the last tunnel were clean and sleek looking, but I did slip off of them a couple times. So this time, I decided to go with something pretty aggressive that you can really lock into.
Started with a set of yfz 450 foot...
So this will be a little out of the ordinary for this site, but.....it is a 4-stroke. This is my Vmax-4 drag sled with a turbo RX-1 engine that I built about 5 years ago. Originally it was a trail turbo setup at 13 lbs of boost running a 136" wahl skid. Since then, it has gotten a horsepower...
Seems to be a lot of variation on this subject. My 2012 XTX has about 5500 miles. I've checked the adjustment 3 times and it has always been very close. Cables are in great shape still. Dad has a 2011 XTX, same story. Seems like there has to be something different in riding...
I just went with the 1.3" cobra as I didn't want to harm top end too much, and even that was a night and day difference over the stock ripsaw. Talking 4-5 sled length difference in 660 on loose snow, it was huge. The ripsaw felt like it would spin for days...
I've been running 1.50" chisels in my XTX the past couple weekends doing some racing, and have had no problems. I'm pulling them out to go back trail riding, but I'd have no issue running a stud that long full time if needed. Stiffen the tunnel protectors and keep the track tight.
Singleshot and Ex-Tras both specifically mention suspensions/shocks.
Another interesting note, maybe totally meaningless but interesting none the less, is that most of the past model name trademarks have been abandoned and have a "dead" status, even as recent as the Attak. However, Yamaha...
Couple of interesting US trademarks as of late pertaining to "Snowmobiles and structural parts thereof"
I'm sure this one has been talked about... "Sidewinder"... http://tmsearch.uspto.gov/bin/showfield?f=doc&state=4810:x120v3.4.3
but also
"Singleshot"...
I have done this, and you are on the right track with the rear carrier wheels and brackets. I don't have the measurements for the front mount laying around anymore, but I bought the front inner supports/brackets from a 2012 Vector LTX (was just the sled I happened to be taking measurements...
Tighten your track up if its running real loose. A loose track can drag on the tunnel or otherwise just waste energy by flopping around when it balloons at speed. Have seen ~10 mph indicated increase in top speed on my RX-1 running a tight track vs loose, same trail same day. ~6 mph on my...
Just ran into that same issue a couple months ago. Autozone had exhaust pipe that was the correct diameter so I just trimmed the mid pipe back to clean steel and welded new ends on. Not as nice as a new stainless piece but will get you going again if need be. If you aren't into welding I'm...
The price is why I kept the skid and decided to fix it. Doesn't change the fact that you said it was in excellent condition and it was received with:
-cracked rail
-cracked and poorly repaired front arm
-2 badly bent wheels
-6 seized bearings
-broken RA cable
-silver overspray on every part of...
